twenty centimetres

twenty centimetres off the ground my soul floats
like a panther wandering through a strange habitat
looking desperately for a territory to call home
it sways and falters, calling out in vain for its specimen

twenty centimetres separate your world from mine
an insurmountable distance to cover
when you’re on the other side of the looking glass
and the only traces left are fingerprints on cold metal

but twenty centimetres from here our hearts will meet
and cover the distance between us
for twenty centimetres are bridgeable
when our fingers and fates are intertwined
